The term emotional eating gets tossed around like it’s a bad word, as if emotional eating is something to be ashamed of.
Shaming emotional eating is simply a reflection of our society’s fear of emotions. We’re constantly told that we’re too much of something- too cold, too emotional- there’s no winning.
There's no way to live on this earth without experiencing emotions, and learning to embrace our emotions, lean into them, and learn the lessons they are here to teach is when we begin to find inner peace and freedom.
In addition, eating is an emotional act, there’s no getting around it. We eat with our loves ones, we eat when we celebrate, we eat when we mourn. The opposite of emotional eating would be considered unemotional eating and who wants to do that? To live without experiencing emotions is to no longer live a full life.
Emotions ask us to listen, to stay awake, to be curious, to cultivate connections, to know ourselves.
The key is to cultivate and nurture a relationship with food and our emotions so that we eat from a place of awareness, not from a place of wanting to bury our emotions. This is where mindful eating and intuitive eating techniques can help.
Our emotions are here for a reason, a purpose. They may need more or less of our attention. They may need to be explored, or given less importance. Welcome the lessons that our emotions are here to teach us.
Having a healthy relationship with our emotions results in a greater ability to enjoy life, greater capacity to help others, and greater overall health.
